How to Fix Summer Sun Skin Damage

You WILL be damaging your skin if you spend some time enjoying the sun this summer. You must remember to apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen often to shield your skin from the sun's harmful rays. The reality is unless you are a teenager, armed with the body's fortified, youthful ability to sustain damage without visibly exhibiting it other than a sunburn peel, you now will be experiencing dryness, irritation, brown spots, broken capillaries, or wrinkles. There are products to repair and heal this damage, unfortunately most products will only just slightly mitigate the damage and you should see an aesthetic physician or dermatologist to fully start the recovery process. To achieve facial clarity and restore the youthful appearance you want the skin to appear clear, even, and smooth, you must slough off the dead, dull skin. I recommend topicals with Alpha Hydroxy Acids to loosen the bonds between the dead cells and exfoliate them away. Products with Glycolic, Mandelic, Malic, Lactic, and Citric Acids will help you achieve a smooth, even-toned complexion. Hydroquinone lightens melasma, sun spots, and freckles. At our clinics we use the Nonablative or ablative fractional laser resurfacing that will tighten as it lightens and perfects the appearance of sun damaged skin. This type of treatment is considered very safe and effective for improving the texture, wrinkles and oftentimes even the color of photo aged skin. There is little to no down time to these treatments. Many of the Arrestage Laboratories skin care products that we recommend for our patients contain very precise doses of these active ingredients mentioned.

Sun damage or photo-aging will cause dry, dehydrated skin that appears old, tired, and wrinkled. Natural hydrators such as Jojoba Oil, Safflower Oil, and Aloe soothe the skin without leaving a greasy residue. To further soften and repair extra dry skin, look for ingredients like Shea, Cocoa, or Mango Butter. Moisture-binding ingredients like Squalane and Hyaluronic Acid plump and firm the skin from within, instantly reducing the appearance of wrinkles.

Although these treatments will help to repair and renew your skin, it is always important to wear a UVA and UVB shielding sunscreen whenever you are outside. As we age and expose ourselves to the damaging outdoor rays, the sun will eventually produce Precancerous spots (rough, red patches of precancerous skin) can be removed with laser, liquid nitrogen, anti cancer creams, or better still through photodynamic therapy using Levulan or Medvixia and red light to kill precancerous lesions without the risk of a scar. These photodynamic procedures can be used on any part of the body and can improve the appearance and youthfulness of the skin. In our clinic we are a big proponent of the utilization of Photodynamic Therapy. The red wavelength and infra-red light work beneath the surface of the skin for months after the treatments to achieve favorable collagen remodeling to strengthen the tissue matrix as well as heal the visible precancerous lesions.

Enjoy the Summer. Avoid long exposure to the sun. Cover up with hats and long sleeves. Use plenty of sun block especially on your ears and nose. Visit your dermatologist for peace of mind and to catch potentially life threatening skin problem areas early.
